Registering with the General Medical Council
To work in the UK you must have full GMC Registration which must be renewed annually. Feel free to ask us
any questions re the process.
For full information and application form for registration and renewal please go here.
You can work as a Locum Consultant in the UK with full GMC Registration (eg as a Consultant in Internal
Medicine). However if you want to specialise (eg as a Consultant Cardiologist) you must then apply to be on,
and be accepted on, the GMC Specialist Register.
Doctors from outside the EU
If you come from outside the EU you also must undertake the IELTS/PLAB examination as part of the
process of obtaining the GMC Registration.
IELTS Test
The Academic version of the IELTS test is an English test which all non E.U. Nationals have to sit in order to gain
registration with the GMC, so that they can work in the UK. If you are a E.U. National you do not have to take this
test, although obviously having a good command of the English language is important if you wish to work in the
UK.
All the information can be found on their website along with all test centres relating to each country.
