IELTS TEST

The Academic version of the IELTS test is an English test which all non E.U. Nationals have to sit in order to gain registration with the GMC, so that you can work in the UK. If you are a E.U. National you do not have to take this test, although obviously having a good command of the English language is important if you wish to work in the UK.

The test consists of five parts:

 a)   Academic Reading

b)   General Training Reading

c)   Academic writing. A 20 minute task and a 40 minute task

d)   General training writing. A 20 minute task and a 40 minute task

e)   Speaking 5 sections

All of the above information and more, examples, etc. can be found on their web site (www.ielts.org) along with all test centres relating to each country. If you wish to visit this web site, please use the link on our home page to the IELTS site.

There is normally quite a long waiting list in order to sit the IELTS test, so it is imperative that you make an appointment to sit the test as early as possible. If you score lower than band 7:0 then you would have to re-sit the test in order to gain registration with the GMC. The test cannot be re-sat until three months have elapsed.

The results normally take about two weeks to come through and the office will phone the doctor to advise them that the results are in, and the doctor may either collect them or they may be posted. To obtain speedier post, the doctor may request the results to be sent by ‘Express’.

In order to book the test the doctor needs to contact one of the offices to obtain an application form and book the appointment. The form needs to be completed and returned at least three days prior to the date they want to take the test.

They aim to do the test all on the same day, but if there are many candidates on that day, it may go over two days. Once the doctor has passed the test (score band 7 or over) they may then apply for full GMC registration, which in turn, is needed to gain a work permit for the U.K.
